Penn Cove Mussel Festival – Musselfest 2026

Penn Cove Musselfest in Coupeville is a small-town waterfront festival that has grown into one of Whidbey Island’s signature spring celebrations. It has been built around the world-famous Penn Cove Mussels which are grown just off the shore in beautiful Penn Cove. If you find yourself inspired to cook up some of these local delights, this recipe is a classic. https://northwestfrench.com/penn-cove-mussels-steamed-in-garlic-white-wine-sauce/
A Bit of history
Musselfest traces its roots to the mid-1980s, when Penn Cove Shellfish started with a simple chef demonstration and chowder event. The goal was to get people out during the quiet early spring season. Over four decades it has evolved into a three-day festival with thousands of visitors, mussel chowder contests, cooking demos, boat tours, live music, and friendly competitions. The entire weekend is centered around Coupeville’s historic waterfront. This year’s 2026 festival marks the 40th anniversary of the celebration.

About Coupeville
Coupeville sits on central Whidbey Island along scenic Penn Cove, in the heart of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. The town is known for its preserved 19th century waterfront, walkable Front Street lined with shops and restaurants, and close proximity to state parks and shoreline trails. (While visiting, be sure to take a few hours and hike the BEAUTIFUL Bluff Trail https://northwestfrench.com/hikes-on-whidbey-island-ebeys-landing-bluff-trail/) With only a few thousand residents, Coupeville leans heavily on tourism and events like Musselfest, which can draw up to ten thousand visitors. Musselfest weekend is often one of the best weekends for local merchants.
